Watching an offshore storm while the sun is shining on your face should be on everyone's bucket list. Many times the clouds will pass south to north a few miles offshore and you will never even see a drop of rain. The seagulls are instinctive enough to come to shore during (or hopefully before) the storm but, are eager to head back out as soon as it passes.
I've seen birds of all types sitting on the beach, with legs tucked under at times. My first thought was to check them to make sure they weren't sick. I was quickly told by a friend, who is very much an environmentalist, to leave them alone, they are actually resting. I thought about it and it made sense. An offshore storm had just passed and they apparently had to fly through it to get to shore. I bet we would be tired too!
